Illinois WIC is Transitioning Formula Brands for Most Participants

What is Happening?

Illinois WIC is transitioning from providing infant formula from Mead Johnson (Enfamil brand) to formula from Abbott (Similac brand).

When Will It Happen?

The transition began February 1, 2026. WIC families began to be issued Abbott formula at their normally scheduled WIC appointments from February to April 2026. The transition was completed May 1, 2026.

How Could This Impact Me?

All Illinois families participating in WIC will transition to Abbott formula products, with the exception of a small number of families that receive medically prescribed specialty formulas. See more information about medically prescribed formula in the FAQs below.

What Next Steps Should I Take?

Families received more information at their regularly scheduled WIC appointments from February to April 2026. If you have additional questions, please reach out to your local WIC office.

FAQs

  • Federal regulations required all states to solicit bids for infant formula. This process ensures that states select products that provide the best value to meet the needs of WIC families and serve as many families as possible.

  • Enfamil and Similac formulas are nutritionally comparable. Both formulas meet federal standards for infant formula.

  • Certain formulas meet dietary and religious restrictions, such as Kosher and Halal formulas. Additionally, all contract products are vegetarian.

  • Illinois WIC provides a limited number of medically prescribed specialty formulas. These items have been formulated for special medical conditions and are not part of the infant formula contract. The process to receive these will not change. Mead Johnson products which are currently considered as contract but do not meet the “specialty” status include Enfamil AR and Enfamil Reguline. As of February 1, 2026, families can request that these formulas be covered through Illinois Healthcare and Family Services (HFS) via a durable medical equipment (DME) provider when medically necessary with a prescription from their medical provider.
